Moving Women’s Fiction by Manitoba Writer Acquired by Chicken House Press for 2024

Magnan signing her publishing contract

Chicken House Press has secured Nettie Marie Magnan of St. Andrews, Manitoba for her stunningly beautiful novel Dropseed: The Story of Three Sad Women.

Intertwining stories bring together three small-town women and the heaviness of choice. Dealing with such volatile topics as abortion, illness, suicidal ideation, and loss, Dropseed: The Story of Three Sad Women, is a vulnerable and brave look at womanhood with an redemptive arc that proves while happiness may evade some, hope and contentedness is a conscious decision.

Magnan’s prose is strong, and beautifully poetic, capturing aging and womanhood in a tender and heartbreaking way. This powerful narrative offers commentary (and will open the door to discussion) on some very important issues.

All human loneliness can be filtered down in one way or another to the singular, tragic element of silence.
— Nettie Marie Magnan, Dropseed: The Story of Three Sad Women

Nettie Marie Magnan is a writer turned nurse, turned writer again. Raised on the vast and rural prairie landscape that inspires her stories, it wasn’t until years of nursing that she felt compelled to write about loss, hope, the complexities of human relationships, and the beauty and torment and strangeness of being alive. Stories with a healthy mix of melancholy and optimism are the ones she’s always been drawn to, after all.

When she’s not busy working as a nurse or writing sad but optimistic tales, she can be found sketching the pretty elements of the prairie landscape, spending time with her family and cats, failing at both gardening and cooking, and as a lover of antiques, she enjoys volunteering at a local heritage museum.

Dropseed: The Story of Three Sad Women is her debut novel, and she hopes to carry readers into a place where the tedium and tragedy of everyday life is embellished into something lyrical, memorable, and helpful.

Watch for it in 2024.
