Books were one of my greatest delights in grade school, high school, and beyond. I devoured the library in the small country school I attended, then practically moved into the much bigger library at the high school. I loved sports, but luring me out of a good book demanded pretty impressive bait. As I grew older, a second passion emerged that led to more than one book being set down too close to aquarium inhabitants who splashed it. I read voraciously, and I wrote, and wrote, and wrote—slowly gaining skill.

Voracious readers don’t always become great writers—but they become obsessively unwilling to settle for mediocre writing and impose that on someone else. That is an excellent starting place for quality.

This book had its genesis in the first year of our marriage, sparked by a 1977 Popular Science article. It went through multiple rewrites in those first few years. When I became involved with a Writer’s Association, it received a complete rewrite EVERY time I learned something new—and there was a great deal to learn. 46 years plus since the first words of this work were hammered out on an old manual typewriter. It should dare to have SOME quality to it by now.
