Powerful Fiction by Port Moody Author Acquired by Chicken House Press for 2025

Perry with his signed publishing contract

Chicken House Press has secured Nick Perry of Port Moody, British Columbia for his stunningly beautiful ecclesiastical novel, Broken Water.

Pulling away from the dark headlines that undermine the intended message of the church as an institution, Perry—a BC teacher—breathes life into the honest search for answers as his main character chases the big questions of faith, purpose, and the existence of a higher power. Intertwining the tension between religious tradition and personal exploration, Broken Water is the fascinating story of an atheist who tries to become a priest.

Perry’s prose is gracefully intellectual, presenting ideas that will settle deeply within the reader, encouraging careful reflection and, inevitably, a re-evaluation over ones own understanding of the universe and its mysteries.

With confidence, poetry, and heart, Perry explores huge philosophical, sociological, and theological questions without fear or pretension; he welcomes the reader into a narrative that feels incredibly honest. With poignant themes and a thoughtful avoidance of agenda, this story will meet readers exactly where they are in their own journey of discovery.

...I wasn’t just thinking about matters of religion but reckoning with them. What did I actually believe? What was most honest? It had only been a short time but a knife only needs a second to carve a permanent scar.
— Nick Perry, Broken Water

With subtle Canadian nods and the influence of the late Shūhsaku Endō—whom Perry describes as presenting “the most touching and fullest representation of all sides of religion in fiction”—Broken Water does the careful work of carving a path to tolerance and understanding.

Broken Water is his debut novel, a sacred expression of the human experience in a tale much larger than humanity—a secular prayer that aims to reconcile doubt and faith, a beacon of grace, a view to how it feels to answer a calling, and an ultimate celebration of the freedom of choice.

Watch for it in 2025.
